    The Zante adventure continues!

Picking up where I left off…

I rose monday morning and hired a quadbike from a rental close to my hotel. Recommended by George actually (the owner of the Canadian hotel where i was staying). A beast and a good way to see the island beyond the spots dependent on the bus service.

So took off. Hadn’t driven a cars in years, let alone a quad abroad and on the other side of the road. A lot of road rage from the traffic, different sport to the UK.

Off to Zante Town the Island capital for the day.

Browsed a few shops for clothes and other bits. Had a cappuccino in a cafe. All at my own slow pace.

Started by waling down the main high street for shopping. A nice wee island town.

I then jumped back on the quad looking for a beach and hopefully a sunbed.

Left the main stretch of the town and along a beautiful coast. In the end I hijacked a sunbed on a beach that was part of one of the hotels. Cheeky move, but no-one else seemed to notice. Even used the hotel toilet and ordered a bottle of beer at the bar.

My sunded had a shade umbrella for cooling down aswell. Was reading my book all day. Funny Jeremy Clarkson anecdotes and signature analogies all about his farm life. Easy reading for the holiday. Finished the book that afternoon actually.

Lovely afternoon and the perfect balance of sunshine and time in the shade under the umbrella with refreshments and snacks.

Headed back to Laganas, parked the quad back at the hotel. On the hunt for dinner. Found a nice spot at the other end (from my hotel) of the Laganas strip. Quiet for had a pint and ordered a burger. Small waves coasting in on the sandlines. Talkative host. Good burger too, red meat instead of seafood this time. Variety being the spice of life en’ all.

Later that night, I was out with an old school raver here called Lisa. Real good vibe about her. A nightclub on the strip called Zeros. See the vid below:

    Both loving Tocas Miracle dropping!

Damn good fun! DJ even threw in a few garage tunes. Fab night! A late one let’s put it that way.

Back at the hotel the next day; chilled by the pool and listened to very different tunes. Some toasty sun again aswell 😊.

80s music like Billy Ocean, Carribean Queen and Toto songs; Hold the Line and Africa. 80s cockneys on the sunbeds with cocktails or G & Ts in one hand and a fag in the other. A real Sexy Beast vibe. Almost Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Radio!

And what did I do? Exactly the same as everyone else. Ordered a Mojito an sparked up a Camel. Then just on cue they played Billy Ocean; “When the going gets tough, the tough get going”.

Stayed at the hotel all day and night that day and soaked up el sol.

The next day day was another boat trip. This one for the full day. The coach picked me up and took me to Zante Town early in the morning. Boarded the ship from Zante Town main port at 9am.

This was the Voutirakos Cruise with the Pirate Ship. And that’s what it looks like.

Started chatting to a guy called Davey who it turned out also lived in Glasgow like me and close aswell. We sat on the top deck of the boat. Took a few snaps and videos. The ocean was a perfect shade of blue as you can see here. You can also see the Jolly Rodger Pirate ship flag at the front, flapping in the wind.

Could already tell it was gonna be a fucking good day.

We stopped at the Keri Caves again first. Fab to see them again. Then close by, we stopped again for an open water swim for half an hour. Perfect for a dip. Got back on-board and chatted to Davey a bit more. He thought I was some ozzie dude 🤣. Even more so when I cracked open my first cold can of lager before lunchtime. We saw the Keri Caves again which are fantastic on any day.

The next stop after that was at Xigia beach for another open water swim up to the shore. A diamond of a spot. Peace.

About an hour later we arrived at the shipwreck. Big part of the day. More stops for photos and videos. The guide talked us through the history of these remains of washed up boat on this coast.

Then another stop by rocks for a final sea swim. Jumped off the top of the boat this time; kamikaze style!

Back on the boat for another beer with Davey. We were then heading back.

After all that excitement, needed some dinner and relaxed evening by the pool bar. Drink in one hand, Camel cigarette in the other. Picking up a book every now and again. That’s a holiday man.

Next morning had some poached eggs and continental bacon for breakfast. I was half board, so breakfast was included in my package. Washed down with coffee.

I met davey again at lunch time. We went to his holiday hangout; a sandwich bar called JPs. The owner was a brummie lass called Emma who I met already selling tickets at the doors of the Loft. Good laugh, salt of the earth banter! We both had a baguette and a pint. Chatted for hours.

Then a distressed young english lad came to us and said he had had all of his money stolen, we both try to help him and provide support. Only 18 and it later became apparent that it was the mate he was on holiday with that done it. The 3 of us took him under our wing; at 18 that sort of thing can happen to anyone and he was a nice lad.

We were out that night drinking and made plans to go to Turtle Island the next day. Me, Davey and the lad Alfie.

And thats exactly what we did that afternoon. We walked to the furthest south point of the strip on the coast. Booked a Speed Boat trip across and jumped on board.

First time on a speed boat for me; really makes you feel alive. But there was no way I was talking pictures of video while we were moving, I’m far too clumsy for that.

    Speed Boat!

We landed on Turtle Island and cracked open a beer. At this point, we were travelling not just on holiday.

We sat down and looked around. All of us were in awe of beautiful and peaceful it was here and talked about just that. Days like this make you present and in the moment.

Me an Alfie then got the swim shorts on and went for a dip in the sea. As fresh as anywhere in the Med.

Sat back on the sand and drank and talked as the light began to fade.

We then got the return Speed Boat back to the Main Island after a perfect day.

In the Loft again that night as the others were leaving the next morning. Went out with a blast!

But my holiday had not finished yet tho.

4 days left and I had big plans for them.

Which I will tell you all about in Part 3.

    2 weeks in Zante

    So…..

It’s been awhile since i’ve posted. Haven’t been anywhere really. Life has seen to that. But September 11th meant something different. For 2 weeks, I was going to run away from life’s wee problems to the greek Island of Zante.

This was a last minute holiday. Needed to be. I had been leaning towards a Greek destination for awhile and decided on Zante for a few reasons. A resort with nightlife, but not too young a crowd. Thinking September would bring more of a mix than a peak season 18 – 30 party vibe. Also, sun and beaches ⛱️. Mediterranean Food and a few nice drinks.

The adventure began with a morning flight on September 11th out of Glasgow. Nothing to be scared of here, arrived early and had a pint of Tennents at the airport, or a “big juicy” as many locals call it. Had some breakfast and took all the excitement in.

    Pint: Official Boarding Pass

So The flight was half 11 in the morning to Zakynthos (the sunday name!). Quite busy and mixed ages, everyone grabbing that cooler September sun. Less families, given that the kids were back in school. Time to play….

Flight was nice, window seat and a few tins of Magners. A ham and cheese toastie for lunch. Chatted to a nice couple next to me. Saw some nice land views across mainland Europe.

Arrived in Greece late afternoon, 4 – 5pm their time. To real sunshine. Grabbed bags and was picked up by a small transfer bus for my hotel. Passed some beautiful dusty and rustic countryside. Being a small island, the drive wasn’t long and soon arrived at my hotel for the next fortnight; The Canadian on the outskirts of Laganas town.

First Impressions: Well, the owner George gave me a friendly greeting and a free shot of some bright red watermelon vodka.

This is good and welcome, but thought this hotel might be a bit more young and lively than I had my mind on…..

Checked out the room… lovely balcony spot. Usual settling stuff (unpack, wifi added etc). Good room, but the air conditioning would have been an extra 14 euros a day haha! Luckily in September this would be less critical.

Then down to the bar for a pint and some food. Had my first pint of the popular greek lager Mythos. Very refreshing. Just what i wanted and needed.

I ordered some grilled sea bass with potatoes and veg. Love mediterranean food and its also a more friendly cuisine for a guy like me with kidney issues aswell.

Enjoying the early evening sun. Asked George the owner a few questions about travelling around the island and pick up some local knowledge for activities. I would be here for 2 weeks after all!

The food was nice grilles, tasty and fresh. The sun slowly setting.

The Feeling: Freedom and pure pleasure!

Eventually decided to take a stroll down to the busy Laganas strip and check out its nightlife.

A buzzing pulse of life and activity. Found an Irish bar with bright lights called The Loft. Had a rum and coke upstairs overlooking the strip:

A young lad called Gino came over an chatted to me for awhile. Also here on his own, you do meet others for sure.

Took time to get my bearings and a feeling for the resort. Exploring in time at an easy pace.

After a few drinks, went back to the hotel bar for a night cap mojito and then to bed.

    Next morning: hotel balcony cuppa!

Not a sea view, but the next best thing. The breakfast was tasty aswell, had bacon and poached eggs on toast that morning. Mediterranean style, with olive oil and a coffee on the side.

Then for a dip in the sea. A stones throw from the hotel.

Lovely and warm. Clear and blue. Enjoyed for an hour.

Back to the beach to sunbathe (see above). Listened to a meditation on Spotify.

There was a restaurant here called Blue Waves with a perfect beach spot and I decided on dinner here in the evening.

Ordered a fancy glass of red vino, to go with some fresh Calamari.

Battered squid with a juicy lemon kick. If you like your seafood, would definitely recommend!

The next day was Friday the 13th and jumped on the bus to the quieter resort of Kalamaki. A beach place. Stopped at one before lunchtime, nice spot before it started to shower. Walk on into the small town of Kalamaki. Then to Kalamaki beach.

Really liked it as a place. Hot, sandy, peaceful with a beer and a snack close at hand. Even had a 20 minute back massage from a Thai woman who was hunting for customers up and down the beach. Did great work!

Kalamaki is peaceful. Two of the pictures above are from a beach bar where I bought a refreshing Mythos. In the sun.

About 5pm, took a walk back into the town and a seat at the restaurant Ambrosia on a recommendation from my mum’s friend. Was basically empty. More fresh seafood, Swordfish this time.

(Saw the Football pic above in the gents!)

A feast. Worth the trip and a justified reputation. So back on the bus to the hotel in Laganas. Already fed, put a pair of swimshorts on and off to the beach for a night swim. Only abroad and on your holiday haha!

Beautiful scenes of Laganas lit up by its life at 9pm. Floated up an down in the dark for an hour.

Then finished the day with a drink and a shisha at one of the Laganas strip shisha bars. A rare treat to cap off a fab day.

Next up was a chilled saturday. Stayed local. Excellent sun, hit 35 degrees. So soaked it up on a hotel sunbed with a book. Book; a silly one by Jeremy Clarkson about his farm. Had lunch at the hotel. Here is the bar / restaurant area:

Strolled down to the beach and sunbathed there in the afternoon. Picked up snacks from a shop on the way. Put on a half hour meditation on my phone for peak relaxation.

Enjoyed a tasty carbonara with a glass of red wine here in the evening. Took my time and appreciated every second of how lucky I was for this nice food. Almost felt like i should of said grace first!

A good feed and a few drinks before a big day on the Sunday.

Woke up first thing for breakfast, a full English. Fuelled up. Picked up my a coach just after half 8. I was going on a boat trip.

The coach took us to the harbour of Zante Town to jump on the boat. See the map below:

We were on the lookout for turtles today!

Stood out on the deck as we left shore and listened to the local guide’s warm hospitality. And a beautiful sunny day for it aswell.

    Boat trip around Zante Coast

Didn’t have to wait long to spot some turtles. One here that popped its head up over the surface.

Fantastic to see. What a privilege.

Further on we stop at the Keri Caves on the southern most point of the island. Formed 5 million years ago. We went inside the caves as you can see here.

    Inside the Keri Caves

Explored these caverns. Stopped again for a swim in the ocean. Jumping off the boat. Perfect temperature. Felt Freeing!

Enjoyed a spread of buffet food on the boat and had dinner back at the hotel in the evening.

When you get back into bed after going on a boat trip in the day, you still feel the gentle rocking back and forth of the ocean underneath you. Bliss!

Next morning, hired myself a new toy…

Still not even at the holiday half-way point, shedloads of fun still to come..

Keep an eye out for 2 Weeks in Zante Part 2, coming soon from me…
